Hey everyone, I'm a novice turner over in the UK (although I lived in Texas for a few years, 20 years ago). I found this forum when looking for information to build a dust collecting hood for my new lathe and figured I'd join and hopefully learn a few things along the way.
I was gifted an old Coronet Major multi use lathe when a friend's father passed away and that was enough to whet my interest in turning. for last christmas my wife bought me a couple of days introduction to turning with a local turner which ended with me bringing home a bud vase, a plate and a bowl. Life has meant I've not done much over the past year and then my wife said she's like to have a go as she'd done some turning decades ago at school.
Now, the old coronet lathe is interesting in the way that old machinery tends to be, with no guards on anything and not a lot of adjustment. I've spent a lifetime working with tools but wasn't happy with her working on something as potentially dangerous as the Coronet so looked for something newer and safer which led to me picking up a bargain used Jet 3520b which is now ensconced in my workshop.
Looking forwards to getting some time to really play with it as retirement is looming in the next couple of years. I'll post my dust collection solution in one of the threads on that subject.
