Hi There,
My name is Lalit Kumar. I am from Buffalo NY area, I am a Newbie in the woodturning space Although an amateur woodworker, My woodturning experience has been exploring the information and watching videos. However, I am gaining the courage to buy a lathe and start playing with it. I hope I will get valuable advice on lathe selection ( at present oscillating between Delta 46-460 and Nova 1624 II). I do not have any photos or videos yet but will surely add as I start my journey. your advice is greatly appreciated.

Regards

Lalit

Welcome to the AAW forum, Lalit. Both lathes are very good. I have turned on the Delta numerous times so from personal experience I think it would be an excellent lathe to own. I have never turned on the Nova, but I have heard nothing but praise about it.

Welcome
One of the best ways to get started is with a mentor or class.
Local clubs, woodcraft, rockier May have classes in woodturning.

Learn the basics of Tool sharpening, tool presentation, curves, beads, coves.......
This can prepare you to make informed purchases as well as put you years ahead of the trial and error method.

Regarding videos - YouTube is the good, the bad, and the ugly. Many videos feature a presenter with a big interest in being on camera with little knowledge of woodturning technique or material selection. Some are down right dangerous.

I encourage you to Use the AAW video source.

This is a searchable list of videos that have been screened by AAW volunteers for safe and effective practices.

Welcome! The two lathes you mentioned are both good models, but they are significantly different in size. There are lots of posts here discussing lathe choices for various scenarios and I know the Nova has been discussed recently, perhaps the Delta has, too. I turn on the 1624-II so feel free to drop me a PM (i.e. "start a conversation") if you have specfic questions about the Nova.
