I started turning in 2010 and I started again in 2024. The first round was dabbling at various projects and trying different things such as handles, spurtles, bottle stoppers, bottle openers, pens, candlesticks, pepper mills and other spindle turning. I learned that keeping the design simple but attractive to the eye can be more impressive than overwhelming a piece with too many details. Learning when to add a line or a bead or a cove continues to challenge me. I tried some bowls but continued to be challenged with gaining a comfort level.
Life forced a hiatus from turning for several years but I was able to reconnect last year. I joined a local wood turning club. I found an article on AAW by Walt Wager describing the use of 2x4 squares to understand grain direction in face turning of bowls. I turned lots of 2x4 bowls from scraps that I found and increased confidence without a fear of breaking the bank on materials. I took a fantastic class with David Ellsworth. The journey continues.
My goals are to learn and to improve and to have fun with the process.
