I recently made a couple of videos as an introduction/tutorial for how I make basic ferrules. If you are interested, you can see them here...

Be kind, there was no script, no preparation, filmed in a filthy battle-worn shop with just my phone. My WIFE thinks I did a great job... but she's a little biased.

A spent 12g CO2 cylinder will make a nice 3/4 in ferrule, wall thickness is 1/32. Air gunners will have a bunch of them.
Boaters too, the small Onyyx style life preservers that inflate with water contact use the same cartridges.

These cartridges could be smaller D. Have to check

In Fl these vests must be worn to count as a vest. They are so comfortable that most boaters wear them.
Not too early to prep for next for those with to much latitude , tomorrow for us.

I have an ONYX Vest it uses a 24g threaded at the top another good choice probably about the same diameter but longer.

The photo above shows some custom burnishing tools all made using 1/2" combination up cut / down cut CNC router bits that had been sharpened to the point that they do not cut in the transition area so therefore they become scrap, but the shank is still good polished carbide. The ferrules are brass with an internal female thread. The fifth one from the left is unfinished so you can see how the ferrules are installed. The ferrules are made from brass compression nuts and after they are screwed on the hex is turned off with a round nose scraper and filed. The wood handle is drilled out as required then the outside is cut down to slightly larger diameter then the inside thread by the length of the nut.

"brass compression nuts" a common plumbing fitting for copper?
Yup. Those, as well as common brass and copper fittings you can pick up cheap at hardware stores (or someone's metal scrap pile after a home remodel, etc) all work well, and brass and copper can be turned on wood lathe with common carbide tools (I havent tried with gouges yet, so I don't know for sure - but Im fairly sure aluminum could also be turned with HSS gouges)

I don't think you would want to use a gouge on brass but a high speed steel scraper works well and carbide tools should work as well.

The first brass fittings I first used for ferrules were the nuts that held the soft copper lines between faucets and the shut off valves but they are a little hard to find since the flexible lines came into use. If you are not too proud to scavenge that is a good source.

And road cyclists. We use them to inflate the tire after changing a flat. More compact than a pump.
