Hello everybody! After 25 years working as a union carpenter in the Boston area, I have retired, and I am looking to take up bowl turning.

I would like some advice about a good starter set up – lathe, tools, etc. I would very much like to buy good quality used equipment that I won’t have to replace within six months as I increase my skill and experience levels. Who can give me some advice? As with any tool purchase, there is a sweet spot between price and value that experienced users understand – can you help me with this?

Also, are there any good classes in the Norwood area you would recommend? Thank you.

Welcome to the forum. Your questions are too general for a specific answer. I take it you want to buy used but not sure what brand? Buying used is economical but it is a waiting game of opportunity and chance. Watch for estate sales , join the local club as Peter suggested (they may know someone with items for sale), watch Facebook and Craig's List. It may take years if you are picky to get what you want.

Matt - not far from you as I'm in Wrentham. Two clubs local to you South Shore in Abington and Gateway in Raynham. If I can help you at all, feel free to give a shout.
