After about 5 years of relatively mild usage, my Metabo ROS won't turn on any more. That is, the switch in the on position doesn't turn the sander on. Two days a go it worked, and then yesterday, no luck. This is the 3 inch diameter model, SXE400. No help from the owners manual. Any suggestions? How do you tell if the switch is bad, versus motor, etc.

Have you tried blowing the dust out of the switch? And blowing the dust out of the cooling vents? That's always my first fix when any dust creating tools won't work and dust is almost always the culprit. After that it's usually something more complicated and I'm not familiar with the Metabo sanders so I can't be of any help.

Not unusual to get some dust in the switch. If dust can get in air and electrical contact cleaner can to. I would try those 1st, then take it apart if needed. Sometimes a switch will mechanically break inside or wire connections get corroded.

I had one fail the potentiometer for the variable speed. Bought a new sander to get back into production faster. Still sitting there waiting for that rainy day fix.
