Moving to a small shop - dust collection recommendations?

My new shop will be a bandsaw and a lathe (Laguna with two dust ports, and an American Beauty). The space is 9x12 I have a ceiling mount Jet airfilter but want something for sanding. The Dust collector can be installed outside of the 9x12 area. Noise however will be a factor.

Any recommendations?

I have a mix of Rikon and Wen tools, mostly. I have a 1300 CFM Wen dust collector. It's around $400. Wen makes good products for the money, but they are tier 2 compared to the big names. Having spent a lot on my bandsaw and lathe, I have opted for cheaper when it comes to things like the dust collector. A Rikon or Jet 1300 CFM will run $600-750. I'm not recommending the Wen per se, but if you are looking at a budget unit, it will do the job.

Oneida does have bench top DCs. Small units with a lot of power, or a surprising amount. The small one was $339 plus shipping. I have one set up on my mini lathe for sanding boxes. I wanted one for collecting the metal dust from my CBN wheels since that stuff is not good for your lungs. Oneida products do have the smallest foot prints. You may want an outside "shed" for your DC. I guess it depends on what all you will hook up to it.

Check out the Mullet dust collection piping. They were a vendor at the SWAT conference in Waco.

If you mount the unit outside the room you need return air ducted back into the space, otherwise the pressure drop will reduce cfm dramatically. If the shop air is conditioned, you want air returned to preserve air temp.

I have a 120V 1.5hp hf system that works fine for the lathe, table saw, and planer (one at a time). The system has a large canister filter. The bag filters load up far too quickly to be of use.
