We tried to get lodging in the main hotel and the alternate . Both are full. Being disabled and being able only to walk short distances I was hoping to get a room close to the convention center. If anyone is thinking of or knows of any one canceling a room at the Marriott please Let us know. We would also welcome any suggestions.
Thanks,
Bill Blakeney

Hi Bill,

The AAW Conference Coordinator is working on a fourth hotel. There is bus service planned to the Crowne and Omni which are about 6 blocks away.
Bus service to those hotels is being provided by the Convention center.
goals for the final negotiations with the fourth hotel include room price and bus service.

Keep watch on the web site.
I;ll also try posting here but may not be as timely as the web site posting.

hope to see you in Richmond.

Al:

Thanks for the update - hope the fourth hotel negotiations come through....still lookin' for a room....It seems that the Crowne Plaza still has rooms (?) just not at the AAW rate. Is this correct? Does anyone know.....??

Is there any update on when a call for volunteers will go out for demo assistants? (Also.....are videographers going to be the "professional" ones we heard about last year?)

Thanks,

Rob

Rooms at the Crowne Plaza

Hi All,

The latest report as of this morning shows that we are only 75% booked at the Crowne Plaza.

There are rooms available every night Wednesday through Sunday.

Our current policy is to wait until this hotel fills before opening registration at the fourth. The AAW is obligated to pay for unbooked rooms. So we want to be sure we use all the reserved rooms.

That said I was told bookings are slowing and that the Crowne would sell out within 2 weeks.

Steve, try again. there should be rooms for the AAW.

See you in Richmond,
Al

After my very bad experience with the Galt House in Louisville, as well as many other experiences on the road both good and bad, I did a little calling. According to the lady at the convention center, parking should not be overtaxed for the AAW event. I am going to have to park there one way or another, so that is a given. But then I talked to some people at some hotels. I called a couple downtown places, and AAW rate or not, the rate seems to be the same at $119.00. That does not include the $10.50/day parking fee I was quoted as well. I am pretty sure they forgot to mention all the taxes that will also be heaped upon any rate. I would not be surprised to see a total approaching $150/day.

So more than likely I am going to be staying just a wee bit further out at the Red Roof Inn for a whopping $49.00/night. If it is like other Red Roof Inns at which I have stayed, it will probably be somewhat Spartan, but clean. That is fine with me, as I do not need a lot in the way of fancy when I am on the road. It is a little more than six miles away, but for a savings of $80.00/day I can drive 12 miles. That works out to a savings of $6.67/mile. Put another way, the savings from staying just a little further away pays for my registration at the symposium. :cool2:

Crowne Plaza still available as of 1 April 08....

I was able to book a standard room today from Thursday (6/19) night through Sunday morning (6/22) at the Crowne Plaza. The woman I spoke with when I made the reservation said there were still several rooms available with the AAW discount rate of $ 119/ night. The web site at the Crowne Plaza states that the "hotel, etc. tax" is at 13%, making the actual per night rate equal to $ $ 134.47. "Self" parking is $ 10.50/day; valet is $ 14.00/day.

Although I hate paying more than necessary for the lodging at the Symposium, the convenience of being fairly close to the meeting site is worth it, particularly if you want to schlep "goodies" back to the hotel from the trade show. It's kind of interesting to see people's expressions as they watch you carry-in "killer" gouges, skews, and huge bowl blanks onto the elevator to ultimately stash them in your room! Maybe if I get a roommate to share the costs, it won't seem so high.....!

See you in Richmond!

Rob

BTW - I just signed-on to help John Hill with the auction, so be sure to bring extra money .....bid high and often!!

Looking forward to my class with Bonnie Klein in 10 days.....!!

This worked out great because we are going down to visit the grandkids. My son got me the weekend pass for my birthday last month. We are staying at the Super 8 in Midlothian for $64.95 a night. It is clean and neat. We have stayed there before. It is near the grandkids so will be a little bit of a drive and it will be worth it for grandma to be near them while I am off playing.
