Does the Nova Chuck 2 need an adapter to screw to a 1 1/4 x 8 spindle.

yes. Some people have trouble with some of the aftermarket ones. I have stuck with the nova brand adapters and never had any problems.
The Nova chuck inserts are made to match their chucks with a range of threads available but they do have a blank insert that fits their chuck and you can have it threaded to fit your spindle if need be. IF you are having it threaded make sure you chose a very good machinist other wise you may get runout (wobble ) when in use.
