I bought my wife a g3 from the marketplace here for mother's day, and she just had to remove the 8x1.25 and put on one of the two nova 1x8 inserts we have on it. One thing I can't find info on is the lettering system. We have insert with a D inscribed on one with a set scew, and one with an X without a set screw. I heard that nova enscribes them with RH or LH for which way the spindle will thread (forward / reverse), but neither of mine show these letters, and my experience with the used market doesn't show RH or LH. Does anyone have a chart or document which shows all the insert abbreviations.

Please help thanks!

Like Tom said if it works it works. I have a Delta 46-460 and there is only one insert that works on it because the threaded spindle is longer. For Jet lathes the D is I think the best. They also make one that is double threaded but I do not remember the letter. You can find all these on the Nova website.

Does it matter? .... unless you just want to know for future reference. Just thread the insert onto your spindle and you'll know immediately.
Not exactly sure if it matters.... safety wise. The only real concern there is safety. One of the inserts has a set screw, so that is the one I will use until I know more. But I would be nice to know so I could speak intelligently about if anyone every asks. But other than that, just curious :) Thanks for the response, Tom.

Oh, and an issue on my Orion.... two super nova chucks... one is older, one is newer... but they have two different inserts (same threading) one insert sticks further out (the older model) and one insert doesn't stick out as far (newer model). On the newer model, the last mike of threading, there is friction (last 180-270 degrees). I figure if I knew the difference in inserts, I could troubleshoot that issue for myself or others.

Thanks of the response Gerald! They all work as they are supposed to. I am the annoying employee who always questions decisions so I can understand why! Just figured someone on here aught to know!

If the lathe has reverse you should use the insert with the grub screw. I replaced all of the steel grub screws with brass ones to keep from inadvertently messing up the threads of the lathe.
Good advise on the brass! I am using the one with the insert, but just curious what all the letters mean! Thanks Bill!!

As Gerald said the Nova website has a conversion chart with all the inserts listed with letter designations, not sure if this is what your after or not. They do make a 1" x 8 tpi dual thread adapter it has threads cut such that you can put it on a right or left hand thread spindle, I bought one when I had a Delta lathe so I could put my chuck on the outboard spindle.

Good idea. I’m going to try using brass grub screws. I quit using the steel ones because of thread damage, which limits my ability to use reverse.

Thanks Vince, I had checked out the Nova website before I started this post, and found this link:

Nova Inserts

Now, right off the bat, I dont see and X or a D.... or the Y or the L on the chart from Nova.

I immediately thought this isn't the right data base. In my experience, Nova pdfs charts found in google do not al ways carry the same information as the instructions and sometime not the website shows different information. So I searched for another data base, but didn't find any. I was hoping someone here had experience in it! Thanks everyone!

Nick, I just checked mine and the two 1 1/4" x 8 are L and have set screw hole. One of the 1 x 8 has an
X with a set screw. The dual left/right thread 1 x 8 has a T and no set screw. After looking at the chart you enclosed in your post the second letter in the part # matches what mine are stamped. Your Y should be 1 1/4 x 8 no set screw and your D should be a 1 x 8 no set screw. Hope this helps with what your asking.
