Are we making any concessions?....even at the expense of safety?

Today, I'm wearing flip-flops in the shop.....my feet love it, but if I drop a tool.....well.....you know! :(

(What I experience here for a few weeks of my Montana summer ain't nothin' compared to what you other turners experience down south, though!)

When I get off work and in the shop it'll be pretty hot. Heat index at 10:15 here in south Louisiana is 104F and the temp is only 89. The heat sticks here like napalm. :)

I'll open the door from house to shop and get some AC - at the expense of having to dust the house :-D

Yah, it left right around July 1. Tell you friends--Don't visit Montana, it's winter 10 months of the year, the mosquitos are the size of B52s, the Unibomber and the Freemen are unremarkable residents, it's so crowded that nobody goes there any more. Thanks.

Odie I just keep the shop doors closed lately, maybe it sits on perma frost :D as it is certainly cooler than the outside, probably about 50F in there.

See when it gets too cold we go south over here, and in the summer we grin and bear it, get sometimes over 30C but not often and for long times, right now it is actually cool.

Here is todays forecast for the next 7 days, what is not to like EH :cool:

Oh yes I do have to keep the shop doors closed !!

wear flip flops 95% of the time shorts n tee shirt. These days my basic rule for life is if I cant grow bananas in the backyard all year round its too cold. :cool:

I have overhead garage doors on both ends of my shop so can open up and put my big shop fan at one end. Creates a nice wind tunnel through the shop and clears the air. When the air gets too thick and the heat index is over 100 like it is most of this week, or I need to put on some finish, I can close the big doors and turn on my window unit AC.

Like your attitude.
I prefer not to live where they think 40F is warm any part of the year.
We have a freeze most years. Bananas grow back.

I have to wear sports sandals - flip flops kill my back.

Florida is hot all summer but it does not get real hot like it does in places like Baltimore or Minneapolis

I'm a fan of flip flops but last year I got plantar fasciitis in one foot and believe the cause was age and over use of flip flops. It was a painful recovery. This year I'm wearing Chaco sandals which give me arch support and are almost as comfortable as flip flops. Actually they are a lot safer. No problems so far.

I insulated my free standing shop heavy and it has paid off. Most days I don't turn on the AC until the afternoon.

Yup i insulated my roof as my shop is a galvanised tin shed and it paid off really well. I can stand both heat and cold just prefer heat any day. Sometimes my shop will reach 40C and over I'm fine with that,but must admit 50C these days is too much.

Same here. My basement is 32x48. Stays around 65 all summer. We do have a whole house air unit upstairs though.
Winters are not fun as mine drops to the 50's. Going to try a pellet stove down there this year.

Rusty-I nearly did this just a few minutes ago. I normally always wear comfortable tennis shoes, old jeans and a ratty shop t-shirt when I'm working, but will often go out in just shorts and sandals to do a glue-up, check a finish or some quick non-turning task. I just went out to glue the bark on a live-edge, but then checked the tenon fit with my Nova chuck in one hand. Somehow I dropped the chuck, and it barely missed my foot (which I'm sure would have broken bones). Months ago I dropped a freshly-sharpened Alan Lacer UberSkew point down near my foot, and y'all know how massive those are. It probably would have amputated a toe! Carelessness is why ER's stay full!
 
Hot summers are part of why I love living in the Pacific NW. Current shop temp is 67. By 8 this evening, it might be 75. Outside is supposed to be 98 today. Turn the fans on at night, several of them, and with my 1 foot thick walls, it stays fairly comfortable in here. In the winter, I have a wood stove. House is the same way.

I've got a window-unit AC in my 12"x20" shop that blows right at my lathe, though I still pour sweat on a hot day. On days in the 90's like this, it can keep temps in the high-70's, which I will take. Y'all be careful in this heatwave. The Southwest is hotter than the devil's armpit right now!

@Larry Copas - I’ve been struggling with plantar fasciitis for a number of years, last year I purchased these compression bands and it’s made a world of difference for me. I wear them nearly every day now. Good luck with yours

Insulated shop and a heat pump. I only run it when I’m working. The unit is quite oversized so cooling is quick, and has allowed me to add two oversized, multi level filters which seem effective at clearing the air.
I always turn barefoot. I like being grounded and letting my feet find the best balance, grip and freedom of movement. Don’t like something like flip-flops because my foot slides on the shoe, the shoe slides in the floor, so inherently unstable.
I‘d spent many years in shops, mostly automotive. So, many hours spend standing under a car, or next to a bench. The smart guys figured out that when something falls, you get the flock out of the way, let it hit, and THEN see what it is.
Working with my wife preparing diner, I dropped the very sharp and beautiful knife. Bounced and skipped off the counter. My wife remarked at how I was four feet away before the knife hit the floor.
Whether you wear shoes or not, whether you wear shorts or chainsawing chaps, NEVER try to catch falling things in the shop!

Dang Hockenbery you're cooler then we are in Tally. It's going to be a hot week I may turn at 3 AM.
