To respond to Torchick's question, I especially like Minwax's Antique Oil finish for walnut. Good penetration and luster and easy to repair if needed.

What do you use on your turnings?

Howdy, John.......

I'm pretty simplistic in my use of finishes. For most everything, I use Danish Oil Natural, and Bealle 3-step buff. Food safe turnings do not have the Bealle buff, but instead have a lemon oil wax over the cured Danish Oil Natural.

The finishes I use are fairly easy to apply, and maintain. It is my feeling that it's not the finish that makes the difference......BUT THE SURFACE PREPARATION IS THE KEY TO A GREAT LOOKING FINISH.

I feel that many turners tend to look for the application of the final finish to be the "magic" that brings out the beauty of the wood, and there is some validity to that thinking, but just how well the surface is prepared to accept that finish is what will make or break the overall effect.........

I understand that from most woodturning catalogs you can now buy new river rocks.... ...you simply throw away the old ones when they are worn out, pop-in a new sharp rock, and have at it. No learning to sharpen needed!!
