My Laguna 1524 banjo has finally broken so now I can upgrade. The Oneway 16" model is too tall and cannot be milled down (not enough material above the clamp), so am wondering if anyone out there has had good success with the 12". It doesn't extend out as far from the bed so could be an issue with larger pieces. Also concerned about attaching to the bed. I am messaging with folks at Oneway but seems they don't get many orders for the 1524. Thanks!

It seems like you could possibly get by with the 16” Oneway if you were to switch out tool rests for lower profile rests?

Thanks for the idea. I looked into that and really was hoping to make the 16" model work. My current banjo is 4.75" high. Currently my Trent Bosch stabilizer has barely any room to go down and keep tools on center, so unless I'm missing something, unfortunately, the 16" banjo (which is 5.5" tall) won't work with it. I had a very helpful guy at Oneway check to see if it could be milled down, but there's not enough material above the clamp.

I recently purchased a Oneway banjo for my Laguna 2436. The Laguna banjo still worked but horrible to work with and design was in my way all the time. I got the Oneway made for a 20" lathe, not a 24" to match the swing on my Laguna. Night and day difference in stability of the tool rest lock, bedway lock, ease of movement and no offset for the post hole. Wish I had done it right away. The 20" banjo was plenty of height while still giving enough support bite for the tool rest post. I fought the Laguna banjo far too long.

Not sure if yours would work like mine but worth looking at getting one size smaller and see if it will work. They mill a clamp to match your bedway when you order.

Maybe the Oneway banjo with low profile Robust tool rests. Their low profile rests for 15-16 inch lathes come in 3", 4", 6", 9", and 12" lengths. On my phone, the low profile start on page two of this link.

I think a banjo for a 12” lathe would soon prove to be quite limiting. (Steve Sinner) Advanced Lathe Tools and Robust would both be glad to create custom tool rests for you. Time to make some more phone calls.

OneWay 1640 banjo and Robust low profile tool rest. Cut off an inch of post and you could get about 7" height.

Bill, my Stabilizer is only 2 3/8" high from the top of the post to the center of my 3/4" boring bar if I take off the tool post collar, which should work with the 5.5" high Oneway banjo. You can substitute another spacer collar to get the cutter centered. If Oneway is willing to mill down the top of the banjo that would give you some more adjustment as well.

I talked to one of the techs at OneWay who took some measurements and said there's not enough material above the clamp to allow milling off 1/2", which is too bad since that would solve my problem. Maybe someone has one that can tell me different? Here are a couple pics that hopefully show my dilemma. This shows the stabilizer set up with 5/8" tool when it's on center, and where it would be with the bottom of the stabilizer at 5 1/2". Maybe I'm missing something on how to make this work. I have reached out to Trent Bosch as well. Thanks to all so far that have made suggestions!

I wonder if you could shorten the piece that holds the boring bar, or drill a new hole below the existing one? From your picture it looks like there is room to raise the arm holder on the shaft.

Bill, I am afraid I misled you a bit. I often use a 1 1/4" bar with a shim on the toolrest for a 3/4" bar, and the bars are not actually centered on the lathe spindle because of the relative heights of the tooling I typically use. If the boring bar were centered at spindle height the measurement from top of post to top of toolrest would be 2 3/4", too high for the Oneway 16" banjo unless you could mill 1/4" off the top. My bad.

I actually set the typical cutter height 1/8" above center as that puts my teardrop scraper right at center, perfect for finishing the bottom of vessels. You may want your cutter at exact center but I find it works well a bit higher as long as I am working with a drilled center hole. I sometimes use a ProForme tool which cuts well at 1/4" above center height.
