Thanks for having me as a member of this forum. My story...
- After earning my MBA, I worked in high tech. In my last position before starting my business, I ran a division of a publicly traded company.
- I formed my own technology business in 1998. At our peak we had 100-employees. I sold it after 20-years to Konica Minolta.
- I remained with Konica Minolta for 5-years, leading to my retirement in 2023.
- In preparation for retirement I took a deep dive into developing fine woodworking skills in 2018. I focused on flat-work. I worked out of a 2-car garage shop that had to be "put away" at the end of the weekend.
- When we moved to Iowa (my 9th state) in 2020, my wife found a house with an indoor basketball court. It's 20'X30' with 17' ceilings. I upgraded my tools and appointed myself Chief Termite, Acute Engel Woodworks.
- When I retired, I was offered a part-time gig working at Woodcraft of Iowa City where I also preside over classes. My classes are mostly technology-driven: CAD design, Shaper Origin, etc. I'm also a Festool addict, so I do Festool demos. I work two 5 1/2 hour shifts a week.
- I've always thought turning was way outside my skill level, but a few months ago I convinced myself to purchase a Powermatic 2014 and some HSS turning tools. I have been teaching myself to turn since then. Fortunately, I have a couple of amazing mentors here in Iowa City who have taken me under their wing. (Shout out to Mark Nelson and Greg Ellison!)
- I'm active on several Facebook woodworking groups. As my skills improve, I'm willing to take the time to provide advice and guidance to people newer in the craft than me who want to improve. If I can't say something nice, I shut the heck up and move on.

If anyone is interested, here's a link to a shop tour that was featured by Marc Spagoulo (The Wood Whisperer) a few years ago. A lot has changed, especially the addition of the lathe. My shop tour starts at the 8:20 timestamp.

I'm looking forward engaging with others in the forum! Thanks again for having me.

Welcome, Paul. When I was starting out a couple of years ago, I found www.turnawoodbowl.com invaluable. It's an excellent site for woodturning basics (and some advanced stuff). Kent Weakley has a lot of videos of him turning bowls, but just as importantly, he has articles and videos on sharpening, choosing the right gouge, drying green wood, and so on.

Looks like a great resource, Kent. I'm on it! Thanks.

I'm also a Festool addict

Nice to "meet" you! And saying something nice or nothing is wise!

Festools are good stuff. :) I have a Festool router, best in a string of routers over the years.

Have a friend in northern Italy who does major remodeling and repairs plus small projects (doors, staircases, etc). His tool storage area was incredible. This is one side of an aisle between rows of shelves.

I was with him when he bought yet another tool. Buys when on sale, likes to have spares. "Festool, Festool, only Festool" he said!

Your buddy obviously applies the same great judgement in friends as he does in tools! Great to be part of this turning community! Looking forward to another great addiction!

Welcome to the forum. Great to see your shop in video. Looking forward to see how you got the lathe in there.
Thanks, Gerald. I moved the MFT cart to the outside door where the small white assembly table was. I’m now using that in conjunction with my turning. I also designed a 3D printed mounts for my chucks, calipers and tools so I could utilize the area occupied by my conduit and a bunch of dead space. Photos…IMG_7624.jpegIMG_7626.jpegIMG_8251.jpeg

That shop is way too clean, Paul. ;)
I need the angels to sing when I walk into my shop. The only way I male that happen is to take the last 15-30 minutes in the shop in the evening to get everything put away and the dust cleaned up. I owned a technology services business for 20-years that implemented Lean Manufacturing methodologies. It's now in my blood! Cheers!

I wish I had that gene. I reckon I could learn it. I believe it is probably better for our mental health when our shops are clean.

Are you available for hire? It may be a bit of a walk to my place though...
I currently have paths and designated places to put each foot.

Yep. like JKJ I pretty much just have just enough space to place a foot to get from point A to point B , havent seen my concrete floor (except for glimpses) in something like 20 years .. I was gonna say when I saw your shop photo, that it looks like a pretty showroom, but nobody even uses it. (*looks like* being the operative term)
