Anyone turn Persimmon? I just got a 20" in diameter tree. Also, anyone know the derivation of the term Spalted? Thanks

That is a big persimmon. It is an ebony, though it doesn't have the black usually.

I have turned a few pieces. It's a pretty nice wood, but I have had lots of problems with cracking. Here is an article on persimmon written by a friend of mine.

I turned some twice.....both from same tree.......it turned black.....I thought I had a fungus

gets very hard after setting up, turn it green if you can

I've turned a number of bowls and platters out of persimmon. It turns like butter, cuts cleanly. I love its color, but the grain most often isn't all that exciting. Makes for a good surface for carving and texturing, though. Cuts well with carving. The attached photo is of a piece I turned and carved from persimmon.

Yes, it likes to crack! It's difficult to dry in large pieces, but can be done ... sort of on its own terms. It's always worth the effort, though.
