I made these (and more) goin' on 20 years ago, showing a little road rash now. Not too late to make a few in time for Christmas. (Give with a candle!)

These are maybe close to 4" dia at bottom, about 4" high - 4x4x4 or so blank will work.
Extremely fast and easy to turn.

Mount top end in chuck, face off and turn a simple recess on the bottom, reverse and hold by recess to finish. I use 1/2" or 3/8" spindle gouge.
These are spalted maple, walnut, and maple. I usually make them in pairs but ain't nuttin' wrong with a mixup.

I make a very shallow recess in top for the candle, slightly tapered inside the rim. Eyeball the shape, no rules! You can see I don't even worry about making the shapes identical - no one notices! I like a taper at base and top but have made lots of variations. I leave the recess in the bottom. I plan to make a basic diagram soon and show how simple it is to hold and turn these.

Been there done that, nice lloking candle holders, actually your method of construction or design is very similar to what I normally do.
