Poof! Rikon 18” 10-340 bandsaw just died.

Start windings burnt and shorted. Centrifugal mechanical mechanism came out with rotor and looked reasonable. Looked no further and reassembled. Centrifugal switch contacts were mounted in the bell end still on the motor.

Your expertise was greatly appreciated.

You may want to check your household voltage with a volt ohm meter. Higher voltage can do nasty things to motors. If it’s lot higher than it should be (not just a few volts), contact the electric company for help.

About 20 years ago, I had an issue with the voltage in my previous house that was out of tolerance and electric company corrected it.

The wait continues—motor defective. Broken casing in transit. New one to be shipped. Another week of waiting.

This used to be the statistical outlier....that occasionally, someone would get a broken part on delivery. Today, sadly, it seems the statistical outlier is getting a well packed, properly handled, in-tact part on delivery.... Sad times. Sad times...

Maybe, but it also could be that the stuff that arrives in good order doesn't get reported as often on forums/social media. That said, i've seen some incredibly lame packaging in the past few years. Especially from Amazon and Sam's Club. Those inflatable bags don't stand a chance against some 12 packs of Fairlife Protein Shakes!!

I got a statistical outlier delivered once. Ordered a new 18" Rikon bandsaw. It arrived very well crated. Hauled it home, uncrated, and found it was missing the upper wheel and some other "useful" parts. Seems like someone in the warehouse had crated up one that was being stripped of parts without inspecting it.

Fortunately, they drop shipped another one right away and I got it in just a few days. The warehouse manager said he inspected this one himself! I've been quite happy with the saw.

:O Missing an entire wheel! That's a doozy.

I've had too many shipping mishaps to count nowadays. Amazon as Earl mentioned, is often the worst. I'll get a tiny little part, shipped in a 3 foot long box with a giant half-inflated bubble, and the part is just flopping all about in that giant box. I have had shippers put totally crushed flat boxes on my doorstep, as it the fact that it was crushed was just business as usual (????!) I've had items shipped in empty boxes, no packing material at all, so the items were just bouncing around a largely empty box. Had items dropped off without any shipping packaging at all, even...original product packaging...and worse, left right on the outer edge of the steps up to my front door. As if, the shipping guy, was just DARING the porch pirates to run up and grab the items...and the terrible thing is, there was no mystery! Porch pirates would know exactly what they were stealing!!

Oh, a few years ago, I was purchasing a lot of wood off of Etsy, from a few different sellers. I had over a third of my shipments delivered as EMPTY boxes, with entire sides clearly cut open and the wood was removed. This happened many times, and I had to have insurance claims opened with at least three different sellers. At one point, I started getting them with stickers labeled "received in condition" and sometimes hand written notes "picked it up this way"... Thing is, it was happening to all my shipments from one particular region of the country, and I think there was someone in a USPS distribution warehouse or something that was stealing items. I eventually called USPS and made a really huge stink, as some of the wood was highly figured wood or beautiful burl, and I was never able to replace those pieces (some of them were well over a hundred to a few hundred dollars.) The issue eventually ceased after that...

I have also had a number of packages, usually woods again (why is it always wood?), that were just vanishing. I ordered some extremely rare pen blanks from a guy, around the 2023 holidays. I think it was early december that I placed the order. Apparently it was marked delivered Dec 22, 2023. I was away, and didn't get my mail until after Christmas. I didn't realize that package had already been marked delivered, and I got my mail another couple of times before I started wondering where the package was. Again, USPS. Mail guy insisted he delivered it, but it was definitely not in my mail box. Both I and the seller badgered USPS for a while until they just said they were closing the case as lost. These were woods I had never heard of before, and I've never found again. Just this year, I had a couple of packages, again woods (!!) vanish. I ordered some special stabilized buckeye burl pen blanks with incredible eyes and figure, but with mostly the dark colored wood rather than the blond, I think the end of Feb. Was supposed to arrive on March 4, and it was marked delivered, but I never got them. Contacted the seller, they contacted USPS, and again they insisted it was delivered. The seller said, sometimes, once they contact USPS, it will shake packages loose and they will arrive. Didn't happen, weeks, still didn't happen. Ended up getting a refund. Literally, just a couple of weeks ago...package showed up in my mailbox. I think it was over three months since I'd placed the order.

Maybe this is just a Colorado thing, but...the shipping experience these days sucks. Its horrifically bad, at least around here. I think the only time I really get truly well packaged shipments, is when I buy from someone on Etsy. Etsy sellers really take care with their packages, and they are usually quite attentive to their shipments, things arrive on time the vast majority of the time, and nothing is bouncing around an empty box. :P

The worst packing I've encountered were two sellers on eBay, both purchases of ceramic plates. One simply slipped the plate into a Priority Mail cardstock document envelop without any padding, another one loose into an oversize padded envelop. Results were what you might expect.

My best yet was an order from Stewart batty. Post office indicated they received it the day after I ordered it... Good. One month later the post office still indicates it has been received, not shipped. Next month package search was accepted by USPS. Month 3 package turns up in Florida. One scan. Month 4 it shows up in Georgia.... Funny status on the tracking number "exception event" and says enroute to next terminal and it's at my front door. Hats off to SB tools as everything inside was perfectly safe and sound, but the outside looked like it was used as a wheel chok for a C5. 5 months to go from CO to AZ.

Ah, such a bummer. I guess you can get bad shipping and packaging from anywhere. Etsy though, kind of forces the issue a bit, as they now include shipping timeliness and packing quality/delivery status to the things that they will take funds from a seller to do a refund for. I think that helps encourage better packaging and timely shipping, but even with that, sometimes the timeliness is just out of the seller's hands. On the flip side, as a seller, and I am an Etsy seller, it really puts a LOT of pressure on you to package super well, and ship super quick!!

Ebay is not quite the same. I've had some horrendous packaging from Ebay sellers. I still think Amazon is the worst though...the thing that just cracks me up, is how they will toss a little thing maybe the size of a business card, perhaps half a stack to a stack of them thick, inside of a 3'x6"x6" or 2'x2'x1' box, fill the majority of it with air in a bubble, and ship it! 🤣

I've never understood how things run all the way across the country and back, when you are right next door and a simple strait flight or even a truck ride would have done the job...

Some time back, I needed a long machinist's straight edge. I ordered a Starrett model four times before I got one that was undamaged. Maddeningly, I kept getting them shipped in Starrett's own product-level packaging: a single layer of thin cardboard. For a straight edge that's rated 0.0002" per foot. You ding it, and you've killed it. The first vendor did this twice in a row, and while accepting the returns, had the gall to say that they wouldn't ship me a third even though it was their fault for improper packaging – implying by policy it was somehow my fault! The second vendor also screwed up the packaging the first time... BUT actually understood my feedback about these straight edges and how delicate they are and put the next one in the toughest, most battle-armored shipping tube I've ever received!

I actually contacted Starrett about this, and explaining that vendors were shipping these "bare" out of whatever their bulk crating is. Never got a response... which was disappointing to say the least.

I love Starrett tools and have a good number. But I had the same experience as you when inquiring about a problem with a digital caliper - zero response. I suspect things would be different for inquiries from high dollar customers.
