I live in Lake Point Utah and just getting into turning. I have built 3 paddle boards and I'm working on my second mahogany boat but have never turned. We spend the winters in southern Mexico and I found a ton of videos on You Tube. I ordered a lathe and it arrived this morning, a Jet 1221VS. Looking forward to getting my shop ready and start turning. I joined AAW and I'm signed up for a class next month on spindle turning.

Welcome to the forum and to turning.

Getting a class early will get you into some good habits.

What ever you turn will go a lot faster than a boat
Boats can often take years or at least a large part of one.
Most turned objects are done in hours, often those hours are little chucks of time on different days.

I have a 1221 vs - great little lathe with a big lathe attitude.

Welcome Ronald! I hope that you find this forum - as I have - to be populated by a great bunch of people with not only a lot to offer, but the inclination to help. I know when I first started only a few years ago, I could ask just about anything and get a patient and friendly answer or two. It's a good watering hole, and again, welcome!
