Hi folks If this post is in the wrong discussion group I am sure I will find out LICKETY SPLIT
and be redirected immediately. And promise never to again make that mistake...

I am searching for an article on nesting boxes, as I wish to create such . Nesting boxes that progressively are made smaller and smaller until 4 or five can fit inside the larger boxes..

I have most of the American Woodturner magazines from 2016-2021. and I have searched my own trove to no avail.

Maybe it was published in the UK Woodturning magazine it is possible.

So if any one can help I would surely be thankful assisting me to find that article... I am one of those that need all the help i can get

I believe I have seen such an article somewhere amongst our beautiful association magazines but then my mind
could be tricking me once again.

Thanks so mucho
Michael D Lyle

JUST A THOUGHT: Umm you do realize that AAW's journal is archived all the way back to Issue 1.. On the AAW member website (Mouseover Resources -> Publications, you'll find "American Woodturner" with a decade by decade tab listing of back issues) I imagine if you don't get a response back you may be able to find what you need by checking back issues that you don't already have in your collection? I also seem to recall reading a nesting boxes article somewhere or maybe it was a youtube video... Not sure I'd just follow along with someone's how-to though, the concept, if I was to try one, seems like it would be simple enough to just do up a set by the seat of my pants.. :)

I remember the article, I did make some, but I don't have them anymore and I don't remember what year. As I remember they were just cylindrical with flat tops and bottoms, so it wouldn't be difficult to do without the article. You could start with one at about 1/2" diameter X 3/4", then another one at 1" D X 1- 1/4" etc.

There's also an article search function, but it is frustrating to use - for me it usually returns nothing or way too much, and even the too much seems mostly unrelated to my search. I have to fiddle about with it (trying different search terms etc). But it's worth a try.

Reminds me of those Russian Doll things. Me thinks the biggest thing is to decide whether to start with the biggest one or the smallest one first.
Regardless of the shape you make it’s just a matter of making one fit nicely in the next larger one. Good luck… and post some photos of the finished set.
😎👍👍

BTW: Here’s a link to a U-toob about the russian ones…. Enjoy!

Thanks Jim I had forgotten about the search function. and I just wanted to read the article for tips is mainly my plan .

I checked the AAW Journal Index, there is an entry (only one) for "nesting boxes": it is in issue 16.1 (Spring 2001) at pages 41-43. The article is entitled "Matroshka Dolls" and, sure enough, is about those nesting Russian dolls. It is interesting reading, but not a "how-to" article for nesting boxes (or nesting dolls).

Thanks Gord .. Another member sent me a pdf of the very same article.
I will be closing this post out.
Thanks much all.

Don’t give up yet Michael. There is an article by Stuart Thomas on Nesting Boxes in the October 2018 issue of Woodturning Magazine. By some stroke of luck I found my issue in a pile of unsorted magazines. I used to put them nicely in Magazine Holders but when I ran out of shelf space stopped and discontinued it a few years ago. They are rather plain but his method is detailed well. Can scan and email to you as I do not think the site would like a scanned article attached here?

The most inspiring thing I've seen on nesting boxes was the cover of the Craftsupplies catalog about 4 years ago. It showed about 12 nice boxes made from exotic woods that would nest inside each other. They were made by my hero Ray Key.

Mike What issue number is that? The online subscription doesn't quote issue date.
Thanks
Mike

I remember an article on this but can't find it either. Also one on Japanese nested bowls. Like 8 to 10 very thin nested bowls. Also unlocatable.

Richard Raffan...Thank you so much for your 4-ways projects on the web!! If you see this message, would you please consider doing a 4-ways project on nested boxes??? Please? I'm sure many of us would Love to watch it. Thanks.
