I need to sell a large Oneway lathe and some other equipment. I have posted these in the"For Sale" Forum here without success so far. I ran across a comment from one of our members that one or more of the online social groups provides a similar service with more sales success. I have lost this reference.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Marketplace on Facebook reaches a lot of people.
I second John here. I sold an almost new Nova Galaxy lathe on Facebook Marketplace and got the price I wanted. Selling this way requires having people (some not very serious) onto your property or into your home to see the product in person. That can be a hassle but you won't have any fees for the sale. It does take effort but in general I've had good luck using the platform.

?It may be related to the slow down across the country in individuals spending on high dollar discretionary items. The news media tells us as many as a third of households have cut back on big ticket purchases.

When I retired most of my equipment, shop building, etc went as a package. Now in downsizing to a smaller work area and weeding out excess shop equipment it's been very noticeable people are just not spending money like they used to. Too much uncertainty about the future is my feeling.

When I sold my 4 lathes club members bought them, they were all sold by the day of the last club hands on was over. I am going to be selling my Precision Matthews PM 25 MV Milling Machine (used just once for about 15 minutes) and I'll put it up on Facebook Marketplace.

I sold my Vicmarc VL300 on Craigslist a few years ago.

When I sold a Oneway 1640 I used freightquote.com. I'm guessing they find "empty" space with different shipping companies local to your area. The shipper with the best rate was literally less than a mile from my home. I had gotten a shipping estimate in that company's office but the rate freightquote got me was much cheaper. Facebook marketplace or woodturning tool exchange that is also on facebook are good for reaching a large number of people. If you need a Nichols lathe I have one for sale!

I would say to contact the Portland clubs. Might even get some one to pick it up from you. Not sure about the Salem or our Eugene club.

While you are trying to list various places, go ahead and put it on FB Marketplace. It will take you 10 minutes to list and give you a running start for other venues.

As they say down south, you can’t catch fish unless your bait is in the water.

  • I saw your original sale post some time ago and can offer this...the machine is really dirty and that by itself will turn off some buyers. It gives the 'not taken care of' vibe.
  • As others have suggested...broaden your sale's approach. Turning clubs, market place, anything you can think of to spread the word.
  • I've used a service called 'U-Ship' several times in the past. Many guys maybe interested but they don't know how to go about having it shipped. Consider adding information about these services, their link, etc. I shipped an 800lb piece of equipment to my home a couple of years ago for about $350. Basically...once registered and posted, shippers bid against themselves for the end user's services.

Hope these might help...john
