Should I continue the AAW Symposium photos?

I (and numerous other photographers) have posted photos for the last 10 years on my website, and I have to say it is a heck of a lot of work. I don't do it for the traffic or business, but probably because I want everyone to see what innovations and goings on are going on at the symposium.
But, does anyone look at it? I could go through all sort of reports on traffic to the pages, but really, with the AAW posting so much, and other turners, do you want to see it every year?
If so, can I get some volunteers to take photos of the instant gallery, banquet and demos? They need to understand color temperature and framing the subject. Resolution only needs to be in the screen size range, but in focus without someones butt in the photo (no, this hasn't been an issue in the past).

What do you think? Go or no?

You can check out 10 (9 actually) years worth of photos on

Symposium photos

I am a relatively new turner and have only been turning since I became a member of the Downsized Club. Therefore, I have not been to any national symposia. I had no idea there was the diversity in turning/carving, even with all my visits to various forums.

Please keep it up. I would be glad to assist in photographing if I were able to attend, but maybe I can help next year.

Have fun and good luck taking pics!

Did I mention I would be willing to trade photos for beer and cigars? Maybe. either or neither? We (I use "we" because it is a joint effort of my wife and I since she is the force behind me) will be at the the Crowne Plaza. This year would be a little unique since it will be my 10 year anniversary for demoing and have some behind the scenes photos and I have 4 demos.

Hi Steve,

I'll be taking some pix, however I shot RAW only. I can make the card available for you to copy, but you'll need to be able to read and convert that format to jpeg etm. Does this work for you?

OK, Steve, I confess that I have never looked at the symposium pictures on your site. Since I spend so much time looking at pictures, I can't promise that I will add more to my ever-growing list, but it still sounds like a very worthwhile service that you are doing.

You forgot to mention one thing besides the big butt -- the headless turner -- I'm sure that you have seen them -- the turning is so great that the turner's head is irrelevant.

I won't be at the symposium, but for you RAW shooters (and misguided JPG shooters as well), it wouldn't hurt to carry a WB reference card to shoot ever so often. I use a WhiBal and sometimes an x-rite reference, but in a pinch, just a plain old sheet of cheap white copier paper will work quite well. However, do not shoot a sheet of "Bright White" inkjet paper because they contain UV brighteners that can do strange things to white balance. If you can find a green filter for your flash, it will be a great help when shooting under fluorescent lighting. Shooting under mixed lighting is never good news, but a green flash filter can mitigate the bad news somewhat. If the lighting is mercury vapor or sodium vapor, I don't know what to say because of the sparse spectral content of the lighting.

Oh, Bill thinks if it isn't Canon fodder it's no good. I bet he like Apples too. But let's not get this chat off subject. Mark I enjoy your pictures and hope you continue. I can't make it to the Symposium this year as I've spent my play money on classes. And we are going to Port Townsend this fall for the Wooden Boot festival, where I'll be using my non Canon to take wonderful pictures of the boats and the Olympic Penn.

Canon Fodder?

Ha!

I put a mile or two of film through my old Olympus. My couz who's a prof. of photography shoots Canon (Big Bucks in glass). When I decided to go digital, he's the one who pushed me through Nikon's door because I wanted FX format and low-light performance. I shoot a D700 and enjoy it very much, but have friends who do Canon and we're all still friends.;) Strange, though, when we all get together for parties and such, they all ask for copies of my images. I wonder why . . . .:D

[I'll take my speedlite to the Symposium, but anticipate using it or the pop-up very little if at all.]

Steve,

I appreciate your photos very much and looked at every one of them from last year.

Many thanks,

If I had the option, I would be here, but it doesn't pay any bills or help sell any product (I am selling).

Well, I will need some volunteer photographers since I never gets to see demos, and can't be all places.

I have been to 12 or so Symposiums, and every one has given me some inspiration of some sort.

I can handle most any flash card and don't care what format you shoot in. For some reason though, color temp bothers me, since it takes more work to fix than cropping. Can't fix out of focus but image stabilization has helped in that over the years. On camera flashes in this environment throws too strong of shadows, so people tend to go to higher ISOs, another problem altogether. And not as fixable.
My background is in product photography, so I like crisp , clean full frames, but I can work with people as long as they are willing to learn.

I can't make it to St. Paul, but I donated a Walnut piece from my new series for the EOG auction.

I will be happy to bring a camera to San Jose.

Best regards,

Last year I volunteered to photograph the instant gallery for the AAW web site.

Instead of just doing a sampling of the gallery, Lauren and I photographed every piece.

I honestly don't remember if any of them were actually used for the web site. I saw photos made by other people, but don't recall how much of a contribution mine made.

Alan, thanks again for your help last year. We had several photographers last year and used some from each. You're there, just couldn't quantify it.

Steve,

Thanks for the followup. Sorry I won't be able to attend this year. Perhaps we'll finally get to meet when/if I visit my son in TX.
