I want to see the lathe that can take the abuse of full swing mallet hits while setting log sections into a 4 or 5 inch cup chuck.

That is some pretty forgiving wood. Luan?

I've got a hook tool in the drawer, time to dig it out and give it a go.

Well, absolutely no wasted motion... He wouldn't have to make all the funny faces if he had glasses or face mask.... I need to learn the hook tool.... The headstock bearings must be built for a tank.

Interesting. About 1:25, what is the guesstimate of the width of the skew? Looks about 2 inches wide.
 
@Bill Boehme Not sure how I feel about forum members posting Youtube videos here, videos that do not belong to them. I know from personal experience that things can get out of hand. At the turning group that I help manage we only allow personal youtube videos. And that can become annoying too, we now have dozens and dozens of YouTube Masters/Warriors posting: "Latest video on my YouTube channel, click here! Give me a like, tell your friends and family, I'm going to make a lot of money with my videos! We could not get a majority vote between 5 admins, I said no external links allowed. I feel they use the group for advertising. When @hockenbery for example, posts a link here to a youtube video to emphasize a technique, or to help make a point, that is how a YouTube video supposes to be used.

Isn’t that what this link is about. A new technique. That guy can use a hock tool like nobodies business. I for one am going to try it out. Looks way to easy. I bet my first piece is going to hit the roof.

If I want to do research about hook tools I would not be using this unsafe video of a turner squinting to avoid shavings on his face and eyes. This video violates safe practices. I would not call this a new technique, hook tools are one of the oldest tools in woodturning. hundreds of years old. Personally, I know how to search using Google and other search engines I do not need other turners to search for me. If we all start posting videos that we like and or find interesting the forum would look like YouTube. Worst yet, I just realized, the link is of a Youtube video linked to Facebook.
 
Emiliano, I don’t object to this kind of external link appearing, as I feel it results in interesting discussion that ultimately helps educate. Usually. Mea culpa, however. I did recently insert a video clip of an SNL skit into the Johnson’s Paste Wax thread merely for its humorous value. If this violates the group’s rules, I’ll certainly refrain from such a thing in the future. I also completely agree with your concern about this one taking us to Facebook. I avoid Facebook completely as a matter of principle, as I find it a very negative societal factor on many levels, (granted with some redeeming qualities). But that’s a topic for another discussion.

I certainly think that it is healthy to discuss what we like to have here. I manage the largest Spanish speaking woodturning Facebook group, with almost 14000 members. Seems like a lot of people are trying to make money with videos on Youtube, so they join just to gain views. Take a look at the link that started this thread. I do not see anything of value. If you post a link and ask: guys what kind of tool is that? Or do you think is OK to close your eyes instead of wearing a mask like the turner in the video? I already described above when I think that it's ok to post a Youtube video at the forum. I'm going to repeat it, posting a video here just because someone thinks is funny, with no explanation, like a ReTweet or a Share in Facebook, I do not think this is the place.
 
I agree 100% with you, Emiliano. Embedding a YouTube video as a comment in a thread is one thing, but in this case, there is a redirect* to Facebook and its endles drivel. The URL redirect was posted by the OP without any supporting commentary to justify why it was posted. I see absolutely no redeeming value in the video. It certainly has no valid instructional value and I won't have this forum dragged down to that level of non-relevant cheap entertainment. I considered deleting this thread, but decided instead to close it and leave it as a bad example. Anybody feeling the urge to post this sort of off topic content please do it somewhere else.
