I have not tried this, I'm just passing it along. Search "Lost Art Press soap finish" for more hits over the past 10 years or so. I don't think I would use it for food contact pieces, the reasons should be self-apparent.
 
Craftsman have spent time over centuries for a great snake oil finish. Worse than ever these days. I am not swayed by all the discussions, thin coats of varnish or sprayed shellac work perfectly for me.

I'm not sold on soap as a finish either. I agree with you. But someone here will try it and let us know what they think of it.
