Sold turnings/bought tools

I sold a few bowls and hollow forms and needed to replace some tools. This hobby must support itself so I try to sell enough to make this happen. I donated several bowls to charity events and someone at the last event contacted me and purchased 5 cherry bowls for Christmas presents this year.
With any sale I split the money with my wife, just because. Now the first time this happened she said “ no, keep that and buy your tools” when I insisted she took it and those words have not been spoken again, she just takes it!

I like my Thompson tools, tried a half inch bowl gouge a couple years ago and really liked it and bought several more. After I split the money with my wife I bought the skew, spindle gouge, and a half inch replacement gouge.
I have several Crown tools and like them, really not much difference in the sharpness of the M42 on the crown but I like the feel of the Thompson better in my hands. I generally use both when turning and always have several sharp and ready when turning so I don’t have to stop and sharpen as mush, just grab an another one when needed.

Also talked to my dentist at my last cleaning, gave her a bowl, and she gave me four more cleaning tools to use in the shop! Now we are discussing a dentil drill for piercing !!!

Nice! I try to reinvest any money I make also. Pretty much just do gifts now though.

I give and donate more than I sell. I didn’t have time to do any shows this year but may need to do a couple next year to keep some $$ in reserve for oil and sandpaper

Someday when they end up at a garage sale or estate auction maybe someone will get a laugh..

I like your hobby plan. I try to do that but my wish list is usually bigger than sales results!

Except for my addiction to the bargain boxes of hook and loop from klingspor. They really got me when they went to $3.50 shipping. I was cleaning the other day and counted 8 boxes stacked around. No problem here....Noooooo

hi i got this dental drill and it works great for the little stuff just be aware of the collet size & endless number of bits on this site too

A story I like to tell..... After I decided to "step up" from a 4 speed Atlas to a 3520A, the big lathe paid for itself 3 times that year. That covered all the new "accessories" I needed to go with the lathe. I was already doing the local Saturday Market selling custom Hacky Sacks (footbags to the purists) and juggle balls. The turnings paid far better than sewing the footbags....

I’ve been fortunate to pay for all my turning equipment and tool, plus have a little extra, from my turnings. Of that was after about 2-1/2 years of not knowing what I was doing, then finally got high speed internet so I could watch some videos!

I have seven Thompson tools and looking at a few more for later.
I think Crown is missing out by not having a separate handle with replacement tools. Their M42 keeps an edge about as long as the Thompson.
