Sorby 1/2" thick scrapers at Woodcraft.....

I just got one of the 1/2" round nose, 1/2" thick extra heavy Sorby scrapers from Woodcraft. Man, this thing is one big thick scraper!'

I was wondering if anyone else is using these....? If you are....how about an evaluation.....what you think, and how well these scrapers work for you.

I've been using an Rude Osolnik 5/16" thick 1/2" round nose for about a dozen years, and it's time to get another to augment it.....thought I'd try this one out. (I guess this is now a discontinued item from CSUSA....?)

I also got a Pinnacle 1/4"x1/2" scraper. This is the second one of these Pinnacle's I have. They're made in China, but seem to be a great value. Any comments on Pinnacle?

I have a HD Crown scaper about the size Sorby. Its a great rescue tool. I try to 'cut' as much as possible with gouge but more often than I like a little scraping in the center is required.

Awhile back Grizzley was the cheapest place to buy Sorby tools. I don't know if that is still true.

Pinnacle tools - I used the 5 piece starter set to fill out some holes in my tool collection when Dad decided he wanted his old Woodsmith set back. I find them to hold an edge pretty well so I consider the HSS to be of good quality. My only complaint about Pinnacle is that the handles are too big in diameter and yet feel too light weight. I intend to make new handles but just have not done it.

I bought one a 3-4 months ago, their suppose to be a Woodcraft "exclusive" Nice and thick lots of weight to dampen any vibration and chatter. I like mine alot. Use it like any other scraper.

If they are discontinued , I would recommend you RUN out and pick one up in store.

negative Rake

After working with Sutart Batty this spring, I resharpened mine to a negative rake, softened the corners and I use it on a a light angle to make the final cut (that's cut, not scrape) on bowls and boxes. This thing cuts like no other tool I own.

I just spent time with Eli Avisera at Arrowmont. Eli (pronounced Ellie) has created a 1/4" thick radiused end scraper which has a ver unusual grind on it. This scraper, which you sharpen upside down on your fine wheel, will also make the final cut on a piece. He calls it his bowl finishing tool and there is a video clip of it on youtube.

No, no.....it's the Rude Osolnik scraper that's discontinued. Sorry, I was a little vague about that.

I tried out the extra thick 1/2"RN scraper yesterday. I'm impressed with it. It's good to have such a weighty scraper in 1/2" width. I can see where it'll be a welcome addition to my tool line-up.

I purchased a round nosed one and a hook nosed one several years back from a Woodcraft store. At the time I was interested in finishing bowls with them and wanted the extra thickness to give me better stability. About the third time I used the hook nosed one, the tool broke off at the handle right where it slims down. Although the steel left a small divot in my bowl from being spun around and thrown out, there was no evidence of a catch causing this failure. It also put a nice three inch long but not too deep cut on the back of my left hand. Still have no idea what caused that thick piece of steel to come apart! I took the two pieces back to Woodcraft and they credited me back the price of the tool since I didn't want to try another one. I've still got the round nosed one, but it's not used for much, and I've found I can get a really nice final cut with a sharp bowl gouge.
