Special Interest Night (SIN) is a set of member organized and run sessions that bring people with common interests together. We launched SIN in 2007 at the suggestion of Carl Voss ( see page 10-11 of the winter 2007 journal) and it was terrific.

Ed Davidson posted the current SIN schedule at
http://www.woodturner.org/sym/sym2008/sin2008.pdf

Sessions coming back from last year include: Collectors of Wood Art, Ornamental Turning, Segmented Turning, hollow turning, Pen Turning,

We have a couple of new ones
Box Turning - See the post by Michael Stafford in the sticky section

Education Opportunities - taking the next step
All about where and how to increase your skill level. A few good classes will do more to increase your enjoyment of woodturning than all the toys in the trade show.

Woodturning and Disabilities- Just added should be a great session!
CONTACT Rich Alderfer to help! Wanted:
1)Woodturners interested in helping others with dissibilities.
2)Dissabled turners who can teach others, or identify their own needs.
3)Medical & Education professionals who turn wood and work with
dissibilies.
4)Turners with dissabled family members.
5)Turners who create aids to assist persons with dissabilities.

If you want to propose a session

Al-what happened to the SIN of beerdrinking????:D Gretch

Gtrech,

As we read this, there are several dedicated alcoholics doing dilligent research into the Richmond brew scene. I expect a balanced, although slightly slurred, report of their efforts by May 15th. Naturally, I'll pass it on. ;)

We prefer "hopiphiles" in this context thank you.

Al I'm going to find a robot that will record all sessions and just send them. The I will sit at the bar and await their reports. Maybe I can get one of those new spy drones that looks like an insect and send it.

Beer Scene Report for Richmond forthcoming!

After this semester is over (May 10th) for me, I will be reviewing and posting a report on the brewing scene in the Richmond area, especially for locally produced beers that should be tried while in the area. I don't know how much information will be available on the spectrum of beers available in each of the bars in the three major hotels suggested by the AAW (hard to find this kind of information for most 'hotel bars'), but I will report on major 'drinkeries' in the immediate area that would be accessible by foot or short cab ride, and on the "regional" beers brewed in that area. I did one of these for the AAW Symposium in Louisville in 2006, and because of the status of Portland being a major 'beer center', this was not really necessary last year. (I actually led a beer tour in Portland back in 2000 for the Botanical Society of America - about 40 'participants' on a bus; we visited 7 breweries and enjoyed 'sampling' all day on one saturday.)

There is no rule against having a post-SIN gathering of those beer aficionados who appreciate a quality brew. Over the past few years at the AAW Symposia, I have enjoyed sharing some beers with several of the folks frequenting this forum, and making many new friends combining my interests in woodturning and love of quality beer (.....those who are also ham radio operators, or homebrewers would hit the 'trifecta' with me!).

If people are interested in putting something "organized" together of AAW beer aficionados for after the SIN events, let me know!

Cheers!

Rob Wallace
