BestWoodTools makes the best I’ve found. I also like that he sells one which is threaded so it can be used with a draw bar on the headstock. We use that one on our MDF Rose Engine Lathe 2.0.

I also needed the same going from my male 1x8 spindle on my Vicmarc to the female M33 of the Glaser screw chuck and a Oneway 3” stainless faceplate - all my M33 accessories were free so I figure I can spend some dinero on adapters. Here’s what I think will work best for my needs:

I may need to see what this Best Wood Tools thing is though because the Oneway adapters ain’t cheap

Where do find a spindle adapter?
I need to go from a 1"-8 spindle to M33.

I have on from ONEWAY that I like a lot.
It cylindrical threaded 1x8 inside and m33 outside
It is almost like an insert so very low profile in use.
Works great on a ONEWAY 1018 or a jet 1221vs

Pricey but worth a look.

Al, you’ve pointed out the EXACT problem I have with most spindle adapters - they're not low profile!

I elected to purchase the adapter that we mutually shared here. However, they’re not available at any retailer in the USA currently (I’ve emailed several Oneway purveyors in the states and have yet to receive a response in the last 10 days) that I could find. I called Oneway and spoke to a wonderful gal named Jennifer. She set me up with 2 adapters and very reasonable shipping from Canadia.

Tom, I’d highly recommend calling them and ordering if you go this route. I haven’t received them but I don’t see how they could be a problem. They’re reputable, low profile keeping forces close to the headstock and not unreasonably priced considering the better, IMHO, design for a small spindle going up to a larger diameter.

The ONEWAY puts the Chuck face or faceplate about an inch closer to the headstock than the traditional spindle adapter.
That inch is valuable real estate on an 18 or 21 lathe bed.

It is also set up to lock for reverse turning

Is this what you call low profile?
EDITED FOR MY MISTAKE: Yes, it’s low-pro but I tried it and the threads do not go all that far into the m33 accessory. Yes, the price seems right but the lack of threads contacting are troublesome for me. I can show a photo here in a bit, Tom.

The Oneway adapter that Al and I suggested is more of an insert than an adapter in my view. Much like a chuck would require an insert for your specific spindle, I view the “adapter” as an insert since the male M33 threads go into your accessory then the female 1x8 threads are inside the metal of the male threads. The only protrusion from the M33 accessory will be the slim shoulder of the widest part of the “adapter.” To me, that makes all the difference when limiting vibration is a goal.

Of course, my dad said opinions are like [rectums]. Everybody has one and they all stink! ;)

Tom, I think I understand better now. Bear with me. Photos attached since each is worth 1000 words. The faceplate is M33 and I want it to fit my Vicmarc VL100. I tried these two options (both el cheapo Amazon purchases due to my uncertainty of utility).

The “cheaper” insert/adapter doesn’t have the thread purchase going into the M33 accessory. It is low profile. The traditional spindle adapter, also pictured, puts things too far away from the headstock for my liking. The Oneway seems, at least as I see it, the best so both worlds - lots of threads inside the M33 piece and low profile to keep the forces nearer the headstock.

In the second photo, the threads barely extend to where the grub screw would go in the faceplate. In the third photo, the adapter only fills, at best, the first one-fourth of the total threads on the M33 faceplate. Hopefully that helps clarify my meager written attempt

Some more clear photos to illustrate my original misunderstanding. The M33 faceplate, here a Oneway, doesn’t have thread entirely thru the opening. The low-pro, cheapo insert *looks* like it’s got lots of meat to grip but the relief makes that deceiving. In these two photos, you can see how the adapter butting on the faceplate shoulder fools the mind until you see that the faceplate lacks threads where the adapter *should* grip threads. Hope this clears up my muddy writing.

Craft Supplies adapter

Is this what you call low profile? To see the 1X* to M33, enter the size in the list. It is much smaller than the one show. And, a whole lot less expensive than Oneway or Best Tools.
When I clicked your link it showed me a traditional adapter.
Didn’t realize the first time that I had to choose threads to get to see the picture.
That looks to be low profile

You can measure to check the # of threads engaged. From a design perspective 3-1/2 threads will provide sufficient strength, and in this application disassembly loctite should be used , or it appears there is a hole for a set screw. The joint may vibrate more than one with more thread engagement. Just how big of a project do you plan to attach to the faceplate?

Another way to look at the amount of thread engagement - how long is the typical m33 spindle thread, from base shoulder to the last thread, ie thread engagement?

Hey Tom,

I wanted to close the loop in the Oneway #2961 adapters I purchased. I am really happy with the adapters! The first photo compares the thread length and design. The third photo shows how far down the faceplate the Oneway adapter goes; the fourth photo is the cheaper adapter you referenced earlier. Fifth photo shows the faceplate, adapter on my Vicmarc VL100 1x8 spindle. Here are a few photos to compare and contrast:
