tailstock for old rockwell/delta

Someone gave me an old 1460 delta lathe but they did not have the tailstock for it. I would like to get this lathe up and running but need to get a tailstock for it. I really do not care if it's a delta or not. My question is will a jet 1236 tailstock that has the same bed gap (1.5") width will work? Also has anyone used a riser block on a 1460 headstock for more turnig capacity?

Sounds as if you're mixing generations by calling it Rockwell/Delta and then 1460. Start with the nameplate, where the model number will appear as a 46-XXX, and your search will be easier. http://www.owwm.com and http://www.acetoolrepair.com/ are a couple of possible sources. Be sure and call Delta for a manual. All starts with that model number.

I can't seem to find a manual at OWWM or Delta for this thing...

If you look on eBay you may find some parts... Here's a person parting one of these lathes out, you might contact them and see if they still have the tailstock.

I just bought two old 12" Delta Rockwells.
46-201's I think.
Someone from Delta told me that all the tailstocks up to a ceratin year are interchangeable.
I have several variations of the Delta Rockwell series, three 1460,46-201, and another.
All the tailstocks will switch. The 1460 is great because it can be adjusted. But it is no longer available.
There are two replacements on these lathes.
One cost $200 and the other cost $800. I am not positive the $200 tailstock will work.
The number is 434-03-312-0001 and the cost is $202.21.
The other is 434-04-392-5001 and the cost is $819.71.

Another idea was to get a Jet tailstock, that had a through hole.
The bed is one and half inches wide, I think.
And the height is 6 inches.
I measured the old Delta 12" lathes and it isn't exactly six inches.
So I am thinking of shimming the headstock or milling the bed, whichever needs to be done.
Or both because the old Delta lathes could use a milling regardless.
As far as the shimming of the headstock, I was thinking of putting bolts that would allow me to dial in the exact height needed.

So as far as the answer to the original question. I will let you know as soon as school starts in August if the Jet tailstock can be retrofitted on a Delta.
If anyone has any other ideas or reasons that I am way off base, let me know so I don't waste money.

before you sink $800 in a tailstock you might look what you can buy new for $1500 just my opinion :D
 
If you search eBay using "Delta lathe" you can find old tailstocks for this model. I have refurbished several of these lathes and have found that as long as the tailstock is made for 1 1/2" ways they are interchangable between models without any modifications. You do have to make sure that its the 12" tailstock rather than the 11". They are generally $100 to $150 including shipping. They come up fairly regularly and are a lot less expensive than a new one.

Has anyone tried to retrofit a Jet tailstock on a Delta?
I would like the through hole option.
I am installing cabinets in my house right now I need a kitchen sink.
After this I will order a Jet tailstock, if it doesn't work you will see it on Ebay.
 
Riser blocks for Rockwell 1460

I just noticed that the original post in this thread is over 2-1/2 years old so I'm sure the O.P. has resolved his questions, but FWIW I packed up both the head- and tailstocks of my 1460 to give me just under 19" swing for inboard faceplate and bowl turning. I used mostly 1" MDF, with some Baltic Birch when I decided to go just a bit higher. It was easy, low-tech, worked just fine, and I only needed to buy some new bolts and longer post tool rests for both bowl and spindle work.
