There are many makers who work in Basket Illusion pieces. Every once in a while, a maker presents us with one that stands out. @David Croxton's commissioned work, Geri's Basket Illusion is one of those works.
These images, interior and exterior are a multi-level play on the illusion. The primary illusion is to deceive the viewer into thinking that this is a woven basket. But David does not stop there. Like a magician, the vortex he created pulls you into the coil, and just when you think your eye has come to an end, the thread jumps to the next one, and you're pulled again into his vortex. Try to follow multiple threads, and you could easily become hypnotized.
His choice of colors is stark but pleasing. And the subtle shading is another level of illusion; look closely and you will see that the illusion is simply created by the smallest of squares in the tightly wrapped coil. His lines are precise and crisp, no bleeding between the black and white squares.
A great deal of planning and thought went into the making of this art. Exceptional work, David!
