There have been a large number of nice piece posted to the gallery recently. One of these in particular stood out to me: Forest Floor by Ted Pelfrey. I had the pleasure of seeing this in person a few weeks ago. The details are even more impressive than the photo shows. This was a long term project for Ted, and I think it ended in a rousing success. The visually turned region (bowl and related details) are excellently done--smooth curves without flats/bumps, no tearout, and great framing to highlight the interesting colors and figure. The massive rim that is nicely carved is also well done. A lot of planning goes into these pieces--laying out the design, carving the elements, selective texturing, sanding, etc... Ted's choice of spalted ambrosia Maple is so fitting with the scene, and his finish is appropriately subdued to complement the natural elements.
