This week it was John Lucas’ turn to choose. In his own words:

My choice for Turning of the Week for January 16, 2023 is Twist on a Theme by Clifton Chisum. As someone who has used a lot of compressed wood I found his use as finials on ornaments extremely inventive and well done. I know a lot of work went into this piece. I'm sure it caught a lot of people’s interest.

Great choice John! Congratulations Clifton!

What a cool piece! Might be showing my greenness, but I had never heard of compressed wood before. I read about it (and Clifton’s process) on the original page—a lot of good information there. Very interesting!

Every once in a while you see something quite novel!!

Nice choice and congratulations Clifton. Outstanding piece!!

John, thank you for choosing “Twist on a theme” as turning of the week. Knowing your work, I am honored. And thanks for all the likes and comments, this was a fun project.
The twisted icicles came to me in a rush, I stopped what I was doing and scribbled down a drawing. My first reaction was “There is no way…”. And then the problem solving starts. I love turning, but I also enjoy the problem solving. The “Oh yeah” moment was thinking about using a drilled wood morse taper as a collet chuck to allow feeding the spindle thru the headstock into the tailstock with only a few inches in between. (Still needed opposing finger steady) The looped finial evolved with its own set of challenges. Thanks again.
