I use an A/C type vacuum pump for my vacuum chuck. I was told there was a way to capture the oil mist that comes out of it. Does anybody know about this, and maybe have a picture?
You can put the same filter you use on the intake side to the exhaust side. I would guess that it will increase the back pressure and therefore lower the top end of vacuum available.
Matt you require a De-Mister which is the expensive option or you can make a simple version by getting a tin can filled with Wire Wool or similar, connect the hose from the Pump outlet through the lid of the Can, with the Pipe protruding through the Lid and stopping just [1/2" or so above the bottom of the Can.
Can only needs to be approximately 1/2 gallon size.
Punch some Holes in the lid to allow the Air to escape and you have a basic De-Mister.
The principle is that you slow down the velocity of the exhaust air and entrain the Oil Mist in the Steelwool.
I followed the plans from Ohio (a long time ago) and just put a truck sized fuel filter on the exhaust. It's worked well for five years, although it doesn't muffle it by much.
I tried the filter approach with steel wool packed bottle, packed inside a pail of paced shavings. It did reduce the noise but soon after running the wisp of blue began to appear from the shavings and the haze developed in the shop. My final and satisfactory solution in my case was to drill a 3/4" hole through the wall of the shop and feed a clear plastic 3/4" hose from the output of the pump to outside air, problem solved and the air stays clear inside the shop.
