Lucky me, a buddy gave me two slabs of walnut. This pic. is of the first of the two cheese and cracker platters. It was made as a gift for my youngest dau. and her husband-- -the newlyweds. I suspect it will be used more than once as she is a marvelous chef.

Nice Platter

How about posting a side view also? It would be nice to see how deep it is and see the contours from the side. I like the "high art" pieces, but I like pieces made to be used also. I make mostly practical pieces myself. I look at it this way. If lathes were not capable of making functional objects, lathes would not have been developed as fast as they have. Of course it is fun to push your skills or the lathes capabilities once in a while.
 
Walnut platter

Hi, Tom, Thanks for your comments. I have given the piece to my daughter so posting a side view is not possible at this time. The platter is about 15in and heavy in the center under the dish holder so that it has quite alot of stability when placed on a table, or when passed around a room full of people. Phil

I think that looks very nice. Walnut is one of my favorite woods but beastly expensive where I live.
You were lucky to have been given some of that nice wood and you are making good use of it..

I am curious about what finish you used and if it will be compatable with cheese and crackers and whatever other food items may be placed on it over the years.

Walnunt Finish

William, the finish is just a wipe-on poly - -about 10 coats. It was hardened to 50 days before it was presented as a gift. Daughter know welll enough to put the cheeze in a small bowl that sits in the recess. Phil
