Ok, after watching the video again, I see the spacer. It just doesn't show up in the still photo. Pretty clever.

I saw a Youtube video of a guy who was using a shopvac to suck up the pieces as soon as they were cut. I thought that was pretty clever, as long as you had lots of one size to cut.
 
Efficiency it intelligent laziness.... This is very good. Malcolm Tibbets had a sled that was angled away from the blade on the off cut side. That may have been a bit more simple.
