What do you think it is?

This tree was standing dead in the neighborhood for quite a while. It was in a small group of shag bark Hickory’s. I have been waiting for the city to take it down. The bark was starting to come off in strips, so I figured it was hickory. As you can see, the sapwood is completely rotted while the heartwood is not.

Now I’m not sure if it’s hickory or red oak. It looks to me like red oak, but it’s much heavier than any other red oak I have. It also cuts much easier. I also think it’s harder, because of the way it sounds when I hit it.

What do you think it is?

My guess is some type of red oak from the grain and the rays. Doesn't look like any hickory I have dealt with.

My guess would be Red Oak.

Yep, red oak. If you want to make a show of those medullary rays, you’ll need to turn it the other way around. Pith at the bottom!

Next one will be pith at bottom. I was planning one of each before I cut into the rest.

Must be a different variety of red oak than what I normally find. I really liked it.
