I have a customer who is asking, and I've called it marbling at arount 10 to 2 o'clock in the upper half.......not sure that's a correct descriptive word, though......thanks.

...or fiddleback because the figure only appears on one half of the board which is very common with maple in our part of the country. I have also seen walnut here like that too. Of course, I have been wrong before!!
 
I'd call it a wee bit of God love. (Never know where you'll find it.)

Maybe some one else will set me straight on this, but years ago I was asking 'what is Claro Walnut?' Of all the definitions I have heard, I think it is more specifically a color variation given to Juglens Hindisii which is a species native to Northern and Central California. I have heard several names for the boundary area of grafted English/Persian walnut onto other darker walnut species, and that includes Claro... Other than that, figure is a whole different thing... with just as many name variations...

It is strange....ie it appears checked in that portion.....not sure if it stain or grain (like oak).....strikingly good
 
John I would have to disagree as flame is two sided . That is there are patterns on both sides of a central line . This is Curl. There used to be many names for it such as fiddleback, ribbon , ghost, tiger stripe. However the society that names all the wood terms has reduced them all officially to the term "CURL". This is absolutely curl. Just wish I could remember the name of the group.By the way this is the kind of stuff you get from 40 plus years doing flatwork.
