I have made natural edge Christmas trees from white cedar. Here is a link to the Wood Database article about this wood. I am banned from turning this wood in the house because my lovely bride objects to the odor. I really like the red "heart wood", but it fades to a purple brown, still attractive.
Soft and stringy is my experience, and no it does not have the red color, as that is the Eastern red Cedar, White cedar does smell like Cedar as it is called here, but technical a Tuya species.
