Who is Quinn Miller?

I got an email this morning that seems a little phishy...

I can't find that name. Don't click on any links!
The email doesn't mention the word "Symposium". The 2026 AAW Symposium is in Raleigh, NC. Could it be a non-symposium event?

Perhaps contact AAW directly and ask them. If someone is sending out nonsense in their name they might be interested. The executive director is listed as:
Gretchen Wilbrandt gretchen@woodturner.org

I see no Quinn Miller on the AAW website under business staff.

These are scams. They are selling a directory that, if you even get anything, will be either fabricated or old/stolen/useless data. They target many groups and/or events and/or companies.

First, as has been pointed out, it's not from the AAW and the info they are offering is for some bogus non-existent event.

And second - If you're an AAW member, you already have access online to the membership list (those who want to be listed) - https://www.woodturner.org/Woodturner/Woodturner/AAWConnects/Find-a-Member.aspx

This is definitely a scam. I get these several times a year - same body of text in the email - but always a different username and email address. A similar one circulated last year a few weeks before the AAW Symposium in St. Paul. Some of these scammers aren't bright enough to update the location.

Come on, that guy just wants to send out an offer for catchless skews and self sharpening gouges. For a bonus, you’ll get a left handed screwdriver.

Speaking of "catchless skews", believe it or not I "invented" one years ago just for fun.
Granted, it's worthless for planing cuts but it works for v-grooves and beads. These cuts use only the point, long or short. They catch when the turner fails to maintain the proper tiny clearance and some part of the edge away from the point contacts the wood.

The solution was simple - make only the points sharp and round off everything else!

I don't use it but it was a good experiment. I labeled it so I don't pick it up by accident and get frustrated.
