Received the following email today - feel free to follow up directly with the originator:

Hello, I'm not a woodturner so much as a carver and sculptor. My main thing is building stringed instruments, mostly mandolins citterns and bouzoukis. I recently was asked to consider building a salad bowl banjo for this ladies' husbands' birthday in July. Not a very complex project as it will be an old timey fretless type of instrument with friction pegs and nylon strings. What I need is to find a turner in this area that could supply a hard maple or black walnut bowl 11" in diameter and 4" deep. My e-mail is unclennis@yahoo.com and my zip code is 61231, phone# 309-371-5245. If you can help me out I would be grateful. Thanks, L. E. Hyett.

Sound like fun. I was thinking about building a guitar since I've always wanted to do that. I do play a little banjo and making a banjo body out of a bowl sounds like fun. You would need to either leave an area for the neck to attach or glue up a block. You could do a split turning for the neck and maybe even paddle turning for the head. It could be a fun project.
