That's not a lathe, that is an accident waiting to happen. That's the best job he could do roughing out the blank before hanging it off the faceplate?
Looks like a custom job with that drive shaft. The tool rest on it appears to be similar to the one on the VB36 lathe. Not sure if they are made any more.

Would like to see it in use. Very hard to see controls and details on this "black box". But it looks like a lot of due diligence ( MONEY) ....
