AAW June 2010 Contest

Walnut balanced bowl, EEE and wipe-on poly, 9" x 1-1/2"
Thanks for the compliments. Having never posted anything to the forum before, I figured I may as well start with a contest. The whole bottom is curved, too, so that it does balance at an angle.

Really nice, Greg. Can you talk a bit about the off-center methods used? I'm assuming you hollowed from the true center with a narrow opening, then remounted off center and widened the neck. If so, what method did you use to hold it on the second center? If not, please enlighten.

Norm,

My sequence to make this was many more remountings than it should have been (8 or 9 I think). The inside was actually hollowed off center so the large area is solid and more off balance.

Here is my suggested sequence: mount between centers for shaping of the outside and top face, leave the bottom unfinished (for an offset tennon), remount between centers but this time off-center and make a tenon on the bottom, mount in chuck and hollow, then turn around and finish rounding off the bottom using any number of techniques.

I always use a cup/safety center in the headstock when turning between centers and if I had remembered to check my swing after moving the toolrest, I wouldn't have had to redo the whole outside after hollowing. That was the real reason for so many remountings - but don't tell anybody.
