Playing around with some leftover ash. Different grain orientations, with similar form.
Nice pairing, John. I'm with Tom above--I prefer the vertical grain version. If the other maintained the complete rough bark edge, I would have a harder time choosing ;) Either way, it's a wonderful pair that exemplifies the effect that grain orientation can have on a final piece. Good stuff!
 
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I spent almost no time thinking about design on these, as I wanted to take two pieces from the same waste block and see how the grain orientation changed appearance. While I was very pleased to lose no bark at all on the natural edge, I immediately regretted leaving the base so wide. I definitely prefer the shape and grain orientation of the cut rim bowl.
