Butterfly

I don't usually do realistic images but I do some butterflies. This is about 15 inch, big leaf maple, carved, inlaid, burned for highlights.
The inlay is various metallic powders layered to give it a raku-like effect. I like using metallic powders because they come in so many different colors - no need to mess around with dying minerals. I got the powders off of Taobao (the Chinese equivalent of Amazon) when I was in China but I'm sure you can find similar products easily enough online here. I use Starbond super thin glue. Other advantages of this technique over the use of minerals and epoxy or CA glue is that you use a lot less glue; you don't get air bubbles, which are a pain to deal with; and you get more depth/three-dimensionality, which is particularly good for catching the light at different angles and producing the raku-like effect.
