Dusk is the Opposite of Dawn Side 1

A rare sculptural piece to come out of my shop. I wanted to do something on the theme of "the difference between night and day." But I couldn't find the affect with the aniline dye that I was looking for on the "night" side, so the piece evolved into "dawn and dusk." I really enjoyed the process of making this piece, and rolling with the changes the wood and the dyes suggested.

Comments, critiques, musings are welcomed.

Box elder burl, aniline dye, onyx, gold leaf. The disc is about 12" diameter, 2" thick.
I really like this piece. The contrasts are wonderful. My only suggestion would be to maybe blend the red in a little more subtly. That's just a picky point as the piece is great as it is. Nice work

Thanks guys for your comments!

Mike--I take your suggestion about the red dye to heart. In my defense, I think the red is not quite as intense as the photo makes it appear. But I am very much at the beginning of the learning curve when it comes to dyes. I have on hand some aniline dyes in alcohol, and based on what I've now read and experienced I'm heading towards water based dyes instead. The alcohol dries so quickly that I found it very difficult to control the distribution and intensity of the dye, and too often had to resort to a lot of hand sanding to moderate the effect.

If I had seen this piece of wood, it probably would have been thrown out. But with your eye, a beautiful creation took place. A stunning piece.
