Ancient Kauri
550mm square 21 inches
I had to come up with this series to use up the winged vessels that I blew the top wings on, or two wings anyway.(not really )

Ancient kauri can be a bit brittle to try one of my winged vessels on.
The finish to the wings is copper leaf, exposed kauri, shoe polish, and a bit of air brushing. Followed by a light wire brush, and many coats of lacquer.
Many ask why I spend so much time on the bottom or underside of pieces (no its not to hide bad tooling, or torn grain)
Call it a signature if you will, the effort serves a few reasons. One if this piece is to be an entry into a competition, when the judges turn over the piece, often a My God !!can be herd, will you have a look at this, someone has to much time on their hands .
Richard Raffan was one such judge a few years back.I still believe that the back sold it a s a winner
I believe many of my pieces are judged better if the judges find something out of the ordinary.
Also when it comes time to sell a piece The buyer often gets a surprise when turning over and says man look at the work in this it must be good value for money .
This is the biggest I have done in this series but I think all the effort was worth it.
Do You ?
