Fumed Black Locust Calabash

Fumed Black Locust Calabash

This is somewhat similar to a previous piece that I posted, but is a slightly different style of calabash bowl. Fumed with ammonia and finished with hemp oil. It is fairly small at 3" diameter and 2" height, and very thin. Almost too thin, but I think this works well with the proportions and scale. I do enjoy making these small forms, though they get a bit stressful. Black Locust tends to be pretty splintery when dry, so hollowing was somewhat challenging. In any case, I made this as a thank you for the gentleman that gave me the wood.
Thanks a lot Craig. Black Locust is pretty high in tannins. Not quite at the level of White Oak, so I had to dine it for a bit longer. I left it in my fuming chamber (just a 5 gallon bucket with a foil-covered lid) overnight (around 7ish hours) to get a strong effect.I like the cooler idea.

Good note about the ammonia. I buy mine from Ace Hardware. It’s extra strength, which is somewhere around 10% according to the SDS. I’ve found it works perfectly well, and is pretty cheap. A while ago I did try to find industrial ammonia locally, but needed to order a minimum quantity of something like 1000 gallons. Lol. Fortunately, the Ace ammonia works perfectly well.

That bowl sounds pretty cool. I’d love to see a photo if you have one on hand.

That's good to hear that you are using the HW store stuff and not the photocopier stuff which is, I think, about a 50% strength. Serious health problems are likely. (Think I have a reprint of a Popular Mechanics Shop Notes from like 1915 or so that talks about fuming of a bank where they built the oak cabinets and counters, set out buckets of ammonia and closed the whole thing up for a day or so. I suspect not done with significant thought for safety.)
Can't attach a picture unless it is already on a different site/cloud. I will email it to you.
