Oriental Handled Basket

Its been a long time since Ive posted any of my work. I have been experimenting with several ideas, and this is one of the pieces in my recent studies. For some time Ive wanted to make a piece that incorporated handles. Following my oriental themed work I designed this piece with handles that were turned into the base. I then removed the excess material. The lid follows the similar pattern of my previous Ginkgo Haiku trio, but the piercing is a new pattern for me. As with the original piece, the lids demanded a great deal of time. They had to be turned thick enough to support the inside lip, beads and texturing on the outside ring and yet be consistently thin (1/16) for the pierced section and thick again for the beaded base of the lid handle. The lid handle itself is another new design for me and was made from fiddle back maple which popped the grain nicely when stained and finished. The branded sections were finished in black and the light brown natural colored areas were airbrushed with a golden brown stain. The piece is 5 wide and 4 tall including the handle. All comments and critiques are welcome.

Hi Bill

I saw this piece in the WOW forum and loved it there. Great piece and I like very much where you are going with your work.

Take care

Mark, Thanks for the comments. I've admired your work and the oriental style you often use for some time. I find myself heading that way myself.

The oriental theme is such a rich a deep source of wonderful inspiration I can understand why you enjoy it. As you know there are numerous cultures within it, with thousands of years of history to draw from.

Looking forward to your next pieces.

Take care

Mark
