Smoldering Shreddies

Smoldering Shreddies

Black Oak, cut, burned, painted. This was a fun project. I posted some progress photos in the “what’s on your lathe” thread. At some point I wasn’t going to add paint, but every time I walked past it, the bowl seemed unfinished. So I painted each “shreddie” to look like there was an ember inside. Some credit goes to Barry Larson for the name inspiration. Gotta love food themes haha. 6.5”d x 4”h.
Here are a couple of alternative photos showing the interior and bottom of the bowl.

Mike, the burnt embellished area looks to be at the same thickness asthe bare wood. what process did you take to ensure the burning wouldn't leak into the bare wood area?
Hi Nick. That was a bit of a challenge, especially with the porous areas. Basically, I turned the heat down a bit, angled my tip very slightly away from the bare wood, and then afterward spot sanded the bare wood with 400g paper. It’s not perfect, but it worked alright.
