Three Brothers

These pieces are made from Red Oak ebonized with a vinegar and steel wool fluid. Then they were buffed with tripoli and carnauba wax. The sizes range from the smallest being 6.5" dia x 6.5" tall, the middle is 7.5" dia x 11.5" tall and the tallest is 6.5" dia x 13" tall.
Ed; you have some of the nicest hollow forms I have seen in a while. On the ebonizing, how long do you leave the vinegar solution on before you see results?

very nice, the different sizes make an excellant contrast, what type of deep hollowing rig do you use???

Garmar - First you need to make the solution. Place one XXXX steel wool pad in 24 oz. of white vinegar. Leave in a loosely capped glass jar for about 3 weeks. At that point strain the liquid (use a cone paper paint strainer) to remove any metal left. Now it's ready to use. The answer to your question is about 3 seconds. I coat the whole piece, let it dry and do it again. If you want to get creative, sand away some of the ebonizing or wire brush. Use your imagination. If you buff, use an old wheel because it will get black. If you use an abrasive to buff with, be careful or you will remove the coating. Thank you!

Angelo - Thank you!

Charlie - My arms and hands. I mostly hollow freehand. I do occasionally use the McNaughton rig and laser but only at the very end for a uniform thickness. Thank you!

thats even more impressive
