My first segmented piece… I used maple with walnut veneer to give a “grout” line look. Top and bottom rings are from walnut to contrast and tie together. Lid is curly maple with walnut knob, reflecting the box shape.
This was a backyard tree. It seems that urban walnuts typically have a wider colour variation than forest walnuts, at least in southern Ontario. Cut in July 2021, turned green the same month, re-turned February 2022. Five coats of wipe-on poly followed by Beall buff. 18.5 inches in diameter, 2...
I recently aquired some IPE Brazilian Walnut deck boards from a friend. As the wood is beautiful, my understanding is it's very toxic. Does anyone know anything about this wood and how safe it is for food items. Attached is a bowl I made from it. Thanks for any insight.
Sawn in Aug 2020, rough turned in September, finished turned this April. Bee’s wing figure as the pith was below the bowl bottom. About 15 inches in diameter x 3 inches high. Finished with 6 coats of wipe-on poly.
This walnut was sawn in 1990 and then air dried for 31 years. I call it a platter, some a shallow bowl. It is 23.5 inches in diameter by 2.5 inches high. The long period of air drying produced very rich, chocolate brown colours. It is finished with 8 thin coats of wipe-on poly.
I have a dear friend that wanted an urn for her dads cremains. We looked at a lot of different designs and she decided she wanted a segmented urn. I had never done a segmented turning before so I began educating myself on segmented turning. After a lot of research I found how to make a sled for...
I was browsing through another forum that I frequent and found this video. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Is anyone familiar with the gentleman who made the video?

This is one of my first ornaments, (I've been turning for about a year). Black walnut top and icicle, ball turned from spalted Aspen, finished with spray lacquer. Stand is RG-45 welding rod.
This is my first post on the AAW website. I post regularly on WOW and I thought I would share my work here too.
This wood came from a tree that was cut down in a friends yard and saved for me. At first, I thought it might have been a Butternut tree due to the large amount of sapwood in the...
Turned from end grain walnut, this hollow form vessel measures 6.75 inches by 4 inches and is finished with wipe-on poly. The finish was then buffed with 0000 steel wool to a satin finish.
All comments, especially critiques, are welcomed and appreciated.
This is my latest attempt at a hollow form. I have poured through hundreds of images trying to learn from others. This was inspired by some of Ed Koenig's beautiful pieces. It is turned from end grain walnut, measures 7.5 inches by 4.75" and is finished with Waterlox.
